Prayer shawl ministry

Being In the Present Consciousness/Now & Knitting

The Prayer Shawl Ministry has been busy knitting and building dolls for shipment halfway around the world to Uganda, East Africa. The creations of the team will be distributed to the students of Nyaka school, a school established specifically due to the plight of orphans in the village of Nyakagyezi, Uganda. These care the children of a community that is suffering from the loss of so many of its sons and daughters to HIV/AIDS. This is an exciting partnership, find out more about the school and it's wonderful children by clicking:

AMAZING!

Come on’ Let’s Celebrate!

On the third anniversary of our Prayer Shawl Ministry there are several blessings that have been bestowed upon us that are worth celebrating!

Yes, the Prayer Shawl Ministry of the Unity Church Centre is turning 3 years old!  Who would have thunk it!  I have received several e-mails from the founders of the Prayer Shawl Ministry and Prayer Shawls for Fallen Soldiers commending us for our continued support and activities.  We are one of the few Prayer Shawl Ministries that have lasted this long and have been continually active.

In looking back on all we have accomplished over the three years, I took into account the garments and items we have made. I figured on the average yardage to complete the items and added it up.  Would you be surprised to know that if you add up all the yarn we have used for donated items, it would come to approximately 176,000 yards!  In converting that to feet then to miles it would come out to about 100 miles(!) which is roughly the trip from here to Morgantown, West Virginia!  Now, that’s a lot of knitting!

Second, we have just been bestowed with a little sister!  Yes, we are proud to announce that our sister church, the Massillon Unity Church has started their own Prayer Shawl Ministry!  It was estimated that there would be two people to start this PSM.  But when the meeting started seven people showed up!

What may have made the difference was that Cay Tomerlin opened her sermon with presenting the Director of Music with a purple, hand-crocheted layette made by us for his new baby girl; and a woman in the congregation with a shawl for a recent loss in her family.  There was not a dry eye in the room.  Please hold these people in your prayers that they have a successful Prayer Shawl Ministry.

Finally, in a recent e-mail from Save the Children Foundation, it was reported in a recent study published by the Lancet, a medical journal, that infant mortality in a town in Bangladesh was reduced by over 30% (34% to be exact) with proper post-natal care. This study was started after our first shipment for “Caps to the Capital” went out. The conclusion of this two-year study was that with sterile products, antibiotics, proper instruction on breastfeeding and something to keep the infant warm (a cap) that more than 34% of the infants that would normally perish survived and are expected to continue past the age of 5.

For me, this is a magnificent testimony that one single act of kindness can make a change.  Our collective activity proved that we can make a difference in our community, state, nation, and world by just using two sticks and a piece of string.

I will never be able to thank you all enough for your support and encouragement, come on’ and celebrate with us!

Chabar,
